busy Saturday

The grandparents came down this weekend to watch Elizabeth dance. Afterward ballet class, we hurried to gymnastics. Then, we stopped at the book fair at Chinese school, where Elizabeth had her face painted and I bought some books and some dumplings that we all shared in the car. After lunch and a couple more stops at the craft store and at Target (in the pouring rain), we headed home. I cannot believe how early it gets dark now...

one year ago today...

...I met my sweet son for the very first time. I have been twice blessed. How did I ever get so incredibly lucky?

Jack's week

Jack went to the pediatric cardiologist last Monday, November 2. He weighed in at a whopping 27 lbs. (with his clothes and sneakers on). Then came the hard parts. First, the EKG. Shirt off and sitting in my lap on the edge of the exam table--no tears at that point. When the doctor came in, it was time for The Ultasound. Jack did not WANT an ultrasound. He did NOT like laying on his back AT ALL. I have to admit that it was rather funny, though. Face beet-red, he screamed continuously, "No, thank you! No, thank you!" I must have the most polite toddler in the entire state, if not the nation! What an actor. The doctor told me that he thinks Jack's VSD has gotten smaller (woo hoo!), and he will see him again in a year. Great news!...Fast forward to this past Saturday...more tears. This time, it was all about The Haircut--only the second haircut since coming home one year ago. Even a lollipop didn't help. He now looks like such a little boy. Where did my baby go?...And yesterday, I had to leave work and pick Jack up from daycare because he was sick (high temp, throwing up--the whole nine yards). He had a rough Monday night and sounds worse this morning, so we will stay home today. I waited more than TWO HOURS for the pediatrician's office to call me back yesterday morning (they can't be that busy, can they?), and when they finally did return my call they told me to keep him home and treat him for the flu. I worry because of his heart condition, so I will watch him closely today. We'll stay home and take it easy--having Veteran's Day off as well will help, I think. It's so hard when little ones are sick, isn't it?

the traditional 'pumpkin carving after Halloween'

I admit it--I'm not terribly organized. We never seemed to have enough time to carve our pumpkins this year, but I was determined to do it, especially as it was Jack's first Halloween. He was interested at first but walked away in the middle of it all. Elizabeth really enjoyed herself this year--she did a wonderful job, I think!

so sweet...

Birthday Girl!

Elizabeth turns 5 years old tomorrow--my baby is a little girl now! We had a busy Saturday: after ballet and gymnastics in the morning, we celebrated Elizabeth's birthday (and her friend, Anna's, too) at the Children's Museum later in the afternoon. Elizabeth LOVED everything about the grocery store (the cash register, the grocery basket, and the grocery list were particular favorites) and was quite proud of herself when she mastered sliding down the fireman's pole inside the firetruck. She opened some of her presents after coming home and more of them this morning. Her favorite? Her gift from Nanny and Papa: a Bitty Baby, wearing a sweet little sleeper, and matching pajamas for Elizabeth. She fell asleep with the baby doll lying across her chest. So very sweet!

oh, she's Trouble with a capital "T"

Elizabeth and I had this conversation in the car yesterday on the way to school/work.

Me: "Elizabeth, who's better at playing Candyland--you or Nanny?"
Elizabeth: "Me!"
Me: "You? Why?"
Elizabeth (laughing): "Because, when Nanny goes into the kitchen for coffee, I peak at the cards!"
