Today, we toured a little bit of Nanchang, visiting the Tengwang Pavillion (a nine-story pavilion surrounded by a lotus pool and a garden with large golden statues of all the animals of the Chinese zodiac) and an historic park whose name now escapes me. We crossed the BaYi Bridge several times while in Nanchang. The two huge stone cat statues, one black and one white, that guard the entrance to the bridge across the Ganjiang river supposedly reflect Deng Xiaoping's famous quote "black cat or white cat, the cat that catches the rat is still a good cat." We had lunch in a nearby restaurant. The babies (and parents) in our group are: Elizabeth (me!), Gemma (Rick and Denice) , Sophia (Annie and Steven), Amelie (Kirsten and Johnny), Zoey (Sean), and toddler Ada (the Hunags). Dinner buffet at hotel. We used a lot of bottled water while in China. The hotels gave us some each day, but we had to buy more. The tap water is just not safe to drink, and even the Chinese rely on bottled water for drinking or for brushing their teeth. In addition to using it to drink and to brush our teeth, we used it to make all of the baby’s bottles. Elizabeth’s favorite toys in China were her stacking cups (by far, her favorite) followed by her toy phone and toy car keys (because they made noise), and, of all things, the metal case for Auntie’s eyeglasses. She wasn’t interested in the books that I brought or the stuffed dog that I’d mailed to her at the SWI at all. And she loved Cheerios!
